Mute Video
Remove the sound from a video and keep the picture as is. Files never leave your device.
No upload · Processed in your browserMP4 · MOV · WebM · MKV · 3GP · AVI · WMV · FLV1 GB per file (recommended)As of 2026.10.01
Removes only the audio track. The video is not re-encoded
How to use Mute Video
- 1Drag and drop one video or pick it with [Choose files]. A video with no sound is flagged as soon as you add it
- 2There are no options. Press [Start] to remove only the audio track, without re-encoding the video
- 3Check the result, then save it with [Download]
The big number on the result card is the size of the result file, with the resolution, length and codecs below it. Each result keeps the original name with -muted added, as in clip.mov → clip-muted.mov, and keeps the original format (3GP becomes MP4).
You can add one video at a time. We recommend up to 1 GB on desktop and 100 MB on mobile. Going over the recommendation shows a warning, but you can still continue. Files over 4 GB are not processed. For AVI, WMV and FLV, which go through the fallback engine, we recommend up to 300 MB on desktop and 100 MB on mobile, and files over 700 MB are not processed.
- Example 1 · Muting a MOV
h264-aac.mov (1280×720, 10 s, H.264 + AAC) · 1.1 MB
Measured in Chrome on desktop · synthetic test video (test pattern + 440 Hz tone) · the fallback engine (FFmpeg) also gave a 10.0 s MOV with no audio track
→ h264-aac-muted.mov · 1,011 KB · 10.0 s · no audio track · video not re-encoded (still H.264)
- Example 2 · A video that already has no sound
noaudio.mp4 (640×360, 5 s, no audio track)
Measured in Chrome on desktop · synthetic test video
→ “This video already has no sound” appears as soon as it's added, and it isn't processed
Example figures vary by file and device.
Mute Video options explained
- Removing the sound
- There's nothing to choose. When you press [Start], the whole audio track is removed and the video data is copied as is, without re-encoding. Quality, resolution and length match the original, and the file gets smaller by the space the audio took up. You can't remove the sound from only part of the video or just lower the volume.
- Result format and metadata
- This isn't a setting you can turn on or off; it always works the same way. The result keeps the original format, except 3GP, which is saved as MP4. Every audio track is removed, even if there are several, and one main video track is kept. Metadata such as shooting location and device info is not carried over to the result.
Mute Video: frequently asked questions
Are my videos sent to a server?
No. Muting happens inside this browser and your files are never sent off your device. To check it yourself, follow the steps on the How it works page.
Does muting lower the video quality?
No. The video isn't re-encoded; the compressed data is copied as is, so quality and resolution match the original. The test file h264-aac.mov (1280×720, 10 seconds, 1.1 MB) became h264-aac-muted.mov (1,011 KB, 10.0 seconds) with the video still in H.264. The size saved is what the audio track used.
It says “This video already has no sound”.
The video has no audio track. This is checked as soon as you add the file, and that file isn't processed; the test file noaudio.mp4, which has no audio track, was skipped with this message. Since the video is already silent, you can use it as is. AVI, WMV and FLV are checked after processing starts.
Can I keep only the sound instead?
This tool drops the sound and keeps the picture. To save only the sound, as MP3 for example, use Video to MP3. If you want both, keep the original and use each tool on it. Your original file isn't changed.
Can I remove the sound from just part of the video?
No. The whole audio track is removed. To keep only certain scenes, cut the video first with Cut Video, then add that result here to remove the sound.
Does it work with AVI, WMV or FLV videos?
Yes. These formats, and codecs this browser can't copy, go through the fallback engine (FFmpeg). While it downloads the first time, you'll see “Preparing the processing engine · about 31 MB, first time only”. The result keeps the original format. We recommend up to 300 MB on desktop and 100 MB on mobile, and files over 700 MB are not processed.

- Processed in: this browser (your device)
- Engine: Mediabunny (MPL-2.0) · FFmpeg (ffmpeg.wasm, fallback) (GPL-2.0-or-later)
- Muting runs inside this browser with Mediabunny, and the video data is copied without re-encoding. Files are not sent to a server.
- AVI, WMV and FLV files, and codecs this browser can't copy, are processed with a fallback engine (FFmpeg, WebAssembly, about 31 MB) that is downloaded the first time and kept in the browser cache. The result format and length are the same whichever engine is used.
- All audio tracks are removed, and one main video track is kept.
- Metadata such as shooting location and device info is not carried over.
