How to use Remove EXIF
- 1Drag and drop photos or pick them with [Choose files]. You can add several at once
- 2Each photo's info (location, camera, date taken and more) is listed in a table right away, and removal starts automatically
- 3Save with [Download]. For several photos, use [Download all (ZIP)] to get them in one go
Checking and removal start as soon as you add a photo. The big number on the result card is the result’s file size. Each result keeps the original name with -clean added, as in photo.jpg → photo-clean.jpg, and several photos come as a single images-clean.zip.
You can add up to 50 photos at a time. We recommend up to 50 MB per photo on desktop and 25 MB on mobile. Going over the recommendation shows a warning, but you can still continue. Files over 200 MB each are not processed, and the total you add at once can be up to 1 GB.
- Example 1 · JPG with location data
JPG 1200×900 · 171 KB · with GPS, camera make and model
Measured in Chrome on desktop · test image (synthetic, with fake GPS and camera info)
→ 171 KB (358 bytes smaller) · no GPS or camera info · image data identical byte for byte
- Example 2 · Photo taken in portrait
JPG stored as 4000×3000 · orientation 6 (shown in portrait) · 117 KB
Measured in Chrome on desktop · test image (synthetic)
→ 117 KB · EXIF keeps only the orientation (Orientation=6), still shown upright at 3000×4000
- Example 3 · PNG, WebP and JPG together
PNG 800×600 with text and EXIF chunks (204 KB), WebP 800×600 with EXIF (16 KB), and the JPG from Example 1
Measured in Chrome on desktop · test images (synthetic)
→ One images-clean.zip (3 photos) · PNG 204 KB (same bytes as before the info was added) · WebP 16 KB
Example figures vary by file and device.
Remove EXIF options explained
- What gets removed
- This isn't an on/off option; the info is always removed. It covers Location (GPS), Camera (make and model), Date taken, Software, Author and Copyright, plus Other info (EXIF camera settings, XMP, IPTC, comments, PNG text, modified time and appended data). The items listed in the Photo info table when you add a photo are what gets removed. If there's nothing to list, you'll see “No info to remove”. Photos that only carry structural info used for display, such as orientation and resolution, show this too, and they're still processed.
- JPG
- Removes EXIF and XMP (APP1), IPTC (APP13) and comments (COM). Data appended after the end of the JPG (extra images, motion photo video and the like) is removed too, along with the MPF info that points to it, because those extra images can carry their own location data. JFIF, the color profile (ICC), Adobe (APP14) info and the image data are kept byte for byte.
- PNG
- Removes eXIf, tEXt, zTXt, iTXt and tIME chunks, and any data appended after the end chunk (IEND). Image data (IDAT), transparency (tRNS), the palette, color info (iCCP, sRGB, gAMA, cHRM) and resolution (pHYs) are kept.
- WebP
- Removes EXIF and XMP chunks and updates the flags in the extended header (VP8X) to match. Image data, transparency (ALPH), animation and the color profile (ICCP) are kept.
- Orientation
- For JPG and PNG, if the orientation value isn't the default (1), a minimal EXIF holding only the Orientation tag is added back so portrait photos don't end up lying on their side. The orientation tag contains no location or camera details. WebP doesn't get an orientation tag added back.
Remove EXIF: frequently asked questions
Are my photos sent to a server?
No. Removing EXIF happens inside this browser and your files are never sent off your device. The info read from your photos is only shown in the table on this page and isn't sent anywhere. To check it yourself, follow the steps on the How it works page.
Does removing the info lower the quality?
No. The photo isn't recompressed; only the parts holding the info are taken out, so the image data stays byte for byte the same and the quality doesn't change. In a test JPG with GPS and camera info (171 KB), the image data matched the original exactly and the file got 358 bytes smaller. That's why the file size only drops by the size of the removed info.
Will portrait photos end up sideways?
For JPG and PNG, if the orientation value isn't the default (1), only the orientation tag is kept so the photo displays the same way. A test JPG stored as 4000×3000 with orientation 6 still had just the orientation in its EXIF after processing and was shown upright at 3000×4000.
It says “No info to remove”.
That means no location, camera, date taken or similar info was found in the photo. Photos that only carry structural info used for display, such as orientation and resolution, show this message too. The photo is still processed, so you can download and use the result.
What happens to motion photos?
Video or extra images appended to the end of a JPG can carry their own location data, so they're removed too. The result is a single still photo. If you want to keep the motion, keep a copy of the original.
Does it work with iPhone HEIC or AVIF photos?
This tool accepts JPG, PNG and WebP. Convert HEIC with HEIC to JPG, or AVIF with Image Converter, and the results won't keep location or other metadata. Unlike this tool, those two tools recompress the photo when saving.
